Common football injuries and how to avoid them

When you’re playing football, no matter whether you’re having a kick-about in the park or whether you play professionally, you will be at risk of injury at many points during the course of the game. It is important to try to prevent these to be able to keep playing the beloved sport.

These are some of the most common football injuries, and how to avoid them. Doing so will mean that you can enjoy your sport much more in the future.

Hamstring and muscle strain 

You may hear a lot about sportspeople pulling muscles, and the most common muscle to pull whilst playing football is the hamstring, thanks to the fact that they are used so much during gameplay. In order to prevent this from being a problem, you should make sure that you warm up properly before the game, and focus on plenty of stretches to get your muscles as warmed up as possible. If you do suffer with muscle strain, then you can use pain relief cream such as Difflam™ to relieve the pain, and you should find that this helps you to speed up your recovery.

Ankle sprain

Your ankles are vulnerable whilst playing football, and for this reason it is important to be aware that ankle sprain is a common injury. To help prevent ankle sprain, you need to strengthen your ankles – and a great way to do this is using skipping rope exercises. If you practice low jumps with your rope, this will give your ankle the strength that it needs to protect itself against injury. You can also use resistance bands to perform stretching exercises which will help to strengthen your ankle. For added protection, if you are prone to ankle injury, you should make sure that your ankle is strapped up before playing.  

Cramp

Whilst playing football, if you get cramp you are certain to know about it, as this is something that can be very painful. Suffering cramp could bring about the end of your game, so it is important to try to prevent them if possible. To do this, you should massage your legs before the game if they are prone to cramp, and also make sure that you are drinking plenty of fluids, as this can help to avoid cramp, too. Warming up pre-match is absolutely vital, so make sure that you complete lots of stretches to ensure that your whole body is completely warmed up before you exercise.

Damage to your knee ligaments

Because your knees are in constant use whilst running and kicking the ball during football, there is always the chance that you could damage your ligaments over the long term. Warming up before playing can help with this a lot, and it is also thought that doing weight training exercises targeting this part of the body can help, too.

Ultimately, although there are many common injuries that could occur as a football player, the good news is that there are plenty of ways in which you can avoid them, too. Therefore, you should be able to enjoy your sport, knowing that you have lowered your risk of injury.
